Located in the heart of downtown Hamilton, built in 1889 and restored in 2016, the Spice Factory is a unique urban landmark perfect for couples looking for an industrial wedding. The three floors of expansive great halls and exposed brick, make for an amazing choice for a wedding ceremony and reception with a historic flair.

A Unique History

The Spice Factory was built in 1889 and was originally home to – not a spice factory – but instead the Britannia Lodge for the Sons of England. And in case you're curious, the Sons of England were an English cultural society led by affluent Englishmen, professionals, clergymen, and former military officers who had joined local elites. At their headquarters on Hughson, they held their "At Home" social evenings, modeled on the English music hall, and on these occasions, the Sons were expected to “thrill to jingoistic songs, weep at evocations of England, savor warm dark ale and revert to regional dialects.”

However, the Sons of England and the building they left behind had many tenants through the years. “The Hindoo Koosh Grotto was there. The Baptists too, they say. It's been home to charities, dancers, photographers, insurance agents. And at some point, a spice factory.”

The Cilantro Room is the largest event space at The Spice Factory. Located on the ground floor this room stands out with its exposed brick walls, glowing edison bulbs, and rustic charm. The Black Pepper Studio on the second floor is a popular space for larger wedding receptions. With a stage for the wedding couple and wedding party, it creates a really grand feel for your reception. The hardwood floors add warmth, while the exposed brick walls bring that moody industrial atmosphere The Spice Factory is known for. With the newly installed light fixtures and white ceiling, the space also feels brighter and more refined while still keeping that classic industrial character.
